RN in surgery

As the 20th century drew to a close, the California nursing community began to prepare for what was, and still is, expected to be the worst nurse shortage in our history. The 2000 Scott Commission Report predicted a shortfall of 25,000 nurses by 2006. The report indicated that unless strategies to address the shortage were adopted, California would be headed for a public health crisis. To avoid this crisis, the nursing community, in collaboration with industry, education and the public, must work together on a number of fronts.

Cal-ANSWERS: California Addresses the Nurse Shortage With Extensive Resources and Solutions is a compilation of work and initiatives that have been undertaken to address the nurse shortage in California. CHA and ACNL collaborated on this project to provide health care leaders with information on a number of initiatives undertaken on local, state and national levels to address the nurse shortage. We encourage the use of this information when discussing the nurse shortage with boards, medical staffs, hospital staffs, health care educators and community leaders.
