California Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (CAHHS)

CAHHS serves as the parent corporation for multiple subsidiaries, including Health Property Associates, California Health Foundation and Trust, Inc., and California Hospitals Investments and Publications, Inc. An 11-member board of trustees oversees the management and financial operations of CAHHS.

In addition, the Volunteer Services Committee and Unemployment Insurance Division are operated by CAHHS. CAHHS also endorses the malpractice liability products offered through California Healthcare Insurance, a risk-retention group of CAHHS members.

Unemployment Insurance Division (UID)

UID, a nonprofit operating division of CAHHS, offers complete management services for unemployment insurance claims and appeals to health care employers. UID team members are dedicated professionals who have earned an excellent reputation for honesty and integrity. They are experts with many years of experience serving only health care employers.

Services include:

  • Devoting keen attention to detail in reviewing all unemployment insurance claims filed by former employees.
  • Making in-depth protests to the payment of benefits on all appropriate issues.
  • Pursuing claims through the appeals process when necessary.
  • Handling all written and telephone inquiries.
  • Representing the employer at appeal hearings and, before each hearing, briefing witnesses to review case details and to allay their concerns.
  • Appealing unfavorable decisions and submitting written argument.
  • Auditing benefit charges.
  • Providing activity and benefit charge reports.

UID provides:

  • Specialized staff, knowledgeable in serving health care employers exclusively.
  • Monthly lists of qualified unemployed health care employees -- an excellent tool for recruitment and for reducing participants' U.I. costs.
  • Annual cost savings summaries that quantify dollar savings to you.
  • Health care trade association professionals who are always available to offer advice on individual personnel actions.

California Health Foundation & Trust (CHFT)

CHFT is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation established in 1956 to sponsor and support health care, research and education. CHFT is affiliated with the California Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (CAHHS).  The primary grant, the Walker-Sullivan Fellowship - which established CHFT - is given to health care executives to study health care delivery systems in other countries and other states. Please see Walker-Sullivan Fellowship Award for more information on the annual award, including criteria and list of past recipients.

Recent Walker-Sullivan Fellowship Recipients:

CHFT is committed to assuring that health care providers and health systems are prepared for the rapidly changing health care delivery environment. CHFT can help address these concerns, especially in rural areas, by seeking grants to help fund projects and stimulate the application of innovative ideas in the delivery of health care services on a statewide basis.

 

 

CHFT currently houses several important endeavors, including:


California Coalition for Compassionate Care
(CCCC), a statewide collaboration of more than 60 organizations representing health care providers, consumers and state agencies committed to improving end-of-life care for Californians.  Formed in 1999, the Coalition's work is an extension of earlier collaborative efforts, including the ECHO (Extreme Care, Human Options) Task Force.  

The Coalition's initial work was funded in part by a grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and current efforts are funded in part by the Archstone Foundation. The Coalition has five areas of focus - long-term care, public engagement, professional practices, hospitals and public policy.

California Telemedicine & eHealth Center
(CTEC), a statewide resource center focused on developing the telemedicine and eHealth technological expertise of California health care organizations and providers through capacity building, training, education, networking and regranting for rural eHealth networks.Created in 1997, CTEC has progressively facilitated the expansion of telemedicine and eHealth in California by working collaboratively with hospitals, clinics, county and state agencies, federal and state legislative policy-makers, community-based organizations, and other nonprofit entities throughout the state. CTEC is supported by a grant from The California Endowment.

Critical Access Hospital Technical Assistance Program, providing services and information to the 26 California rural hospitals eligible for this federal designation.  This program is funded through a contract with the state utilizing a grant from Health Resources and Services Administration, Federal Office of Rural Health Policy.

California Hospitals Committee on Issues (CHCI)

CHCI raises funds to finance industry-sponsored and industry-supported ballot initiatives, and oppose ballot initiatives that would be detrimental to the health care delivery system.

Pacific Health Association (PHA)

Founded in 1995, PHA is a nonprofit organization made up of the California Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (CAHHS), Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems (OAHHS) and Washington State Hospital Association (WSHA) — together representing nearly 700 hospitals and health systems. PHA is a vehicle for the three state associations to collaborate and provide better service to their members on a multi-state basis.

PHA is taking steps toward accomplishing its goal to promote an optimally healthy society by collecting, analyzing and distributing information on health plans/insurers and providers to decision-makers such as consumers, buyers and providers. Education on cutting-edge topics and networking opportunities are provided to members through strategic forums.
